Key Components of Project-Based Learning (PBL)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Project-based learning has certain defining characteristics, which, although they might vary slightly from one educational institution to another, remain consistent in essence. These seven characteristics include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. More engaging and effective<\/a> than traditional teacher-centered instruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Involves complex tasks around a central question<\/a>, resulting in reflection, iteration, and creation of a final public product<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Surrounds core subject content<\/a>, allowing students to build knowledge and develop skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Takes place in a student-centered learning<\/a> environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Builds student choice into the process<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Develops students\u2019 research and problem-solving skills<\/a>, that allow for peer review and constructive criticism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Positively impacts students<\/a>, specifically academic achievement, attendance, motivation, knowledge, and cognitive skill development<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Buck Institute for Education, also known as PBLWorks, based on 15 years of literature review and distilled educational experience, identified seven essential elements of PBL<\/a> that focus on project design. These elements, known collectively as “Gold Standard PBL,” are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Sustained inquiry <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Authenticity <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Student voice and choice <\/li>\n\n\n\n

    6. Critique and revision <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Public product<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
